About Us
Who we were and are
Whiteinch & Scotstoun Housing Association Ltd. is a Charity Registered in Scotland, is registered with the Financial Services Authority and Communities Scotland, and controlled by a Committee of Management of local residents comprising a healthy mix of established figures and more recent appointments.
The Association had its origins in two local community groups : the Whiteinch Housing Action Group and Scotfore. The former was established in 1975 with the express aim of 'retention of the community' in the face of demolition of houses and shops brought about by the Clyde Tunnel and the clearance policy of that time. The latter organisation (Scotfore) was set up around about the same time to coordinate a large environmental improvement project in Scotstoun. These two bodies formed the basis of the original membership of the Housing Association which was formally constituted late in 1977.
Achievements and Quality
Our first Housing Action Areas were declared in 1978 and steady progress has been made thereafter. We have
- acquired and improved over 800 houses and built over 150 new units, all originally for rent at affordable levels
- marketed 30 units for Low Cost Home Ownership
We are also responsible for delivering a factoring service to around 500 owner-occupiers in the area, maintaining the common areas of their properties.
The quality of the product has always been important to the Association and to the residents - and it is a quality which has been recognized by others. The Association have collected numerous architectural design awards - from the Saltire Society, the Scottish Civic Trust, Glasgow Institute of Architects, the RIBA and the RIAS. An Association project was chosen for one of the Five Spaces promoted by Glasgow 99 as part of the City of Architecture and Design programme.
We are also responsible for delivering a factoring service to over 450 owner-occupiers in the area, maintaining the common areas of their properties
Whiteinch Local Housing Organisation (WLHO)
The Association is now responsible for the management and maintenance of the 339 Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) homes in Whiteinch. The former LHO Steering Group is now an Area Committee of the Association, charged with overseeing the service to GHA tenants in these properties. The service is delivered by two members of Association Staff located at 1048 Dumbarton Road who may be contacted on 587 6000.
Care in the Community
The Association has a number of projects and referral arrangements whereby it helps to maximise the opportunity for individuals who need support to live within the Community. Tenants with learning difficulties, mental health problems, and those who have a (previous) history of drug or alcohol dependency have been able to leave institutional care and lead relatively independent lives.
More than Housing
The Association is totally committed to the Wider Action agenda and has targeted resources to explore and provide funds promoted by various Government initiatives (Social Inclusion Partnership, New Deal/Warm Deal, Working for Communities etc.).
The Association, working in partnership with the Whiteinch Community Association (WCA), aquired the site of the old Neighbourhood Centre on Dumbarton Road, and has built homes, offices, workspaces and a new comminuty facility, the Whiteinch Centre. This is an exciting project for the Association, as it brings together opportunities for creative design, while providing a valuable resource for the local community. The new development is now open for business. If you are interested in using the Centre, or booking a room, the contact telephone number is 0141 950 4434.
